Artificial Grass

Craig Sargeant and the team at Sargeant Carpets Bognor Regis are suppliers of artificial grass and have a full range of products to choose from.  These include artificial lawn, landscaping grass, fake grass, sports grass, event grass and astroturf.

Artificial grass can be used in many locations such as gardens, balconies, terraces, schools, nurseries and many others.

Benefits of artificial grass

The main benefit of artificial grass is that it doesn’t require mowing or cutting, looking neat and tidy with virtually no effort.  Artificial grass looks very natural and your lawn will always look perfect and green, even in a drought.  It doesn’t require watering, so is a cost-effective option if your house uses a water meter.  It also looks good all year round and is a very safe option for children and pets.

Types of artificial grass

There are three main types of artificial grass, which are nylon (polyamide), polypropylene and polyethylene.

Polyamide (nylon) grass is extremely hard-wearing but isn’t as soft as polypropylene or polyethylene.  For a surface which needs to withstand heavy use, nylon is the best option but is also the most expensive.  If you require a lawn where only light use is needed, then polypropylene or polyethylene are cheaper solutions.

Artificial lawns are available in different pile heights and densities, and the one you choose affects the final look.  Denser piles appear more lush, whereas a low pile can look sparse, although it depends which angle you are looking at it from.  If you view the lawn mainly from a seated position at a lower angle then a low pile can look good.  If your lawn needs to withstand heavy traffic then we would recommend a higher density.

Artificial grass comes in many different colours too, and it can be difficult to choose which shade of green you would like. Craig Sargeant at Sargeant Carpets can advise what would work best for your garden and  has lots of samples to view.  It’s vital to look at these outside, in natural daylight, as the colour will look different indoors.  It might be best to choose a colour which is the same as your existing lawn, and we can find the best match for you.  A lighter colour will brighten up a dark garden, or a sheltered location which doesn’t experience much sun.

Other features of some artificial grasses is that they can include a fire-retardant finish, being able to withstand a degree of animal waste if you have pets, and many come with a manufacturer’s warranty which protects against fibre loss and UV damage (subject to terms & conditions).  It’s vital to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines when maintaining artificial grass for any claims to be upheld so you must read the small print.

Some types of artificial grass offer a natural look technology, ‘feelgood’ technology which feels soft underfoot, and instant recovery technology where the pile is crush resistant and won’t flatten as much with wear.

Installing artificial grass

Craig Sargeant and his team at Sargeant Carpets  are experts at installing artificial grass but would recommend engaging with a groundworker or landscape gardener to prepare the ground first.  We offer a supply-only service also if you wish to install the grass yourself.  To prepare the substrate all existing grass, vegetation and stones must be removed.  Cement and sand can be used to provide a stable substrate.  Artificial grass can also be installed on a hard surface, but we would recommend ensuring it is completely flat and any irregularities are removed.  Drainage is essential, and we can advise what is required, which could include a drainage mat.  Lano publish this guide which explains how to prepare the ground for artificial grass, and this YouTube video demonstrates exactly what is required.

We would recommend using our free measurement service which is supplied if we are installing the grass, particularly if the area you wish to cover is not a uniform shape.  We are experienced installers of artificial grass and will accurately calculate the correct length to order, to ensure there is minimum wastage but giving the coverage required.

It is important to install artificial grass when the weather is above 10 degrees Celsius, and for the optimum installation we must avoid damp weather conditions such as rain and fog.

How to look after artificial grass

Although artificial grass is a low maintenance option, it still requires some attention.  We recommend brushing the lawn every week or two to sweep up any leaves, twigs and other debris.  You must do this gently though, so that the grass isn’t damaged.  Another option for removing leaves is a blower, which is easier to do when they are dry, on a day with no wind which could blow them back after you’ve removed them.  You should apply weed killer every six months to kill weeds and prevent new ones growing.

If you have pets then be sure to hose the artificial grass regularly, and remove any solid waste immediately.  An artificial turf spray can be used on the areas where your pet regularly urinates, to help keep it clean and smelling fresh.

It’s also a good idea to keep other garden trees and bushes trimmed, so that their leaves don’t fall on the lawn.
